(By Delegates Hubbard, Douglas, Mahan, Brown, Fleischauer,

L. Smith)
[Introduced January 21, 2002; referred to the
Committee on Rules.]
Recognizing and honoring the life and efforts of Susan B. Anthony
for her devotion to the women's suffrage movement and the
vital role which she played in obtaining voting rights for
women through the passage of the 19th Amendment of 1920.

Whereas, Susan B. Anthony devoted 50 years of her life to the
women's suffrage movement, through her dedication and perseverance
in her cause of equal representation under the law; and

Whereas, Susan B. Anthony demonstrated the courage of her
convictions when women's civil rights, political rights and
judicial rights were vastly ignored; and

Whereas, After much ridicule and placing herself at risk of
persecution, Susan B. Anthony appeared before every Congress from
1869 to 1906 asking for the passage of a federal suffrage
amendment; and

Whereas, Susan B. Anthony also spread her cause through extensive traveling, rigorous lecturing and canvassing across the
nation for the right to vote while also campaigning for the
abolition of slavery and women's right to their own property and
earnings; and

Whereas, Susan B. Anthony's unswerving singleness of purpose
demanded that women be given the same civil and political rights
than that of men; and

Whereas, Remaining active until her passing in 1906, Susan B.
Anthony did not live to see the consummation of her efforts to win
the right to vote for women; and

Whereas, The establishment of the 19th Amendment in 1920 (also
known as the "Susan B. Anthony Amendment") is deeply owed to her
lifelong endeavor; and

Whereas, Susan B. Anthony is known as one of the greatest
egalitarian fighters of women's rights in American history,
inspiring others to have a voice of courage to step out for their
individual freedom and convictions; therefore be it

Resolved by the House of Delegates:

That the House of Delegates hereby recognizes and honors the
significance, courage and perseverance of Susan B. Anthony as an
unprecedented spokeswoman, advocate, reformer and leader of the
woman's suffrage movement focusing on her belief in the unlimited
human potential for growth and progress and as an American symbol
of freedom and equal representation for all.
